FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is DaisyChess really free?

Yes. No subscription, no premium features, no ads. It is open-source software (GPL-3.0-or-later) run by volunteers.

Do I need an account?

No. Playing, analysing, reviewing and training work without any account. A lichess login is optional — for live lichess games, the opening explorer and importing your own games. Only people who run community nodes log in to the operator portal (with lichess).

How do I delete my data?

Players have no account, so there is nothing to close. Everything the app keeps about you lives on your device:

  • In the app, open Settings: Review cache → Clear cache removes stored reviews; Reset to defaults resets your settings.
  • To remove everything at once — settings, access token, trainer progress, review cache — clear the site data for play.daisychess.org in your browser (or uninstall the mobile app).
  • Reviews on the server contain only moves and evaluations, no names, and cannot be linked to you.
  • Node operators delete their account, nodes and tokens in the portal under Account → Delete account, or write to us.

Step-by-step instructions: Delete your data.

Is my analysis private?

With the browser engine, positions never leave your device. On the DaisyChess server they are processed and not linked to you. On a community node, the node's operator can see the positions (not who you are) — the app always shows which node runs your search. Details in the privacy policy.

Why does server analysis ask for a token?

Server engines cost real computing power, so they are shared with access tokens. You get one from a node operator — a friend, your club, or the shared pool. Open the setup link or scan the QR code and the token is saved in Settings. Without a token you can still use everything with the browser engine.

Which devices and browsers work?

Current versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari on desktop, Android, iPhone and iPad. The browser engine needs WebAssembly; on phones and tablets it uses less memory and fewer threads. iOS and Android apps are coming.

Can I play against people?

Yes: send a friend a link (no account needed), or log in with lichess and play your live lichess games from DaisyChess. For practice there is Stockfish at any strength and Maia, which plays like humans rated 1100 to 1900.

Can I help?

Gladly. Run a community node, report bugs, or contribute code.
