Accessibility statement

We want DaisyChess to work for everyone. Here is where we stand, and what does not work yet.

Our goal

We aim for the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1, level AA, for this website and the DaisyChess app.

What works

  • This website uses semantic HTML, a skip link, visible focus styles and colours that meet AA contrast in light and dark mode. Every page is checked automatically with axe.
  • The 3D pawn is decorative and hidden from screen readers. With reduce motion turned on, there is no smooth scrolling or animation — just a still image.
  • In the app, tabs follow the WAI-ARIA tabs pattern and can be used with the keyboard; the move list, the FEN field and the import work with the keyboard; game navigation works with ← → Home End.
  • The app follows your light or dark preference and respects reduced motion. Clocks and status messages are announced politely to screen readers.

Known limitations

  • The board itself is mouse and touch only. Moves cannot yet be entered with the keyboard or a screen reader on the board; positions can be entered as FEN and games as PGN.
  • The evaluation graph and the board arrows have no full text equivalent yet; the review lists key moments and the better move as text.
